BOE is struggling to produce OLED display panels with Apple's Dynamic Island cutouts for the upcoming iPhone 15, according to a new report from The Elec.
The company is developing panels for both the standard and plus models but was only expected to deliver orders for the standard model. Unfortunately, its displays purportedly suffer from a light leak issue that has not been a problem for Samsung or LG.
According to the industry on the 28th, it is known that light leakage occurs in the hole display of the iPhone 15 series organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel that BOE is developing. Light leakage refers to a phenomenon in which light leaks from a screen without being completely covered. Hole display refers to a technology that secures the space necessary for camera module lenses and Face ID (face recognition) by drilling a hole at the top of the display.
Apple has requested suppliers use inkjet equipment after forming thin film encapsulation to build a dam and separate the hole from the rest of the display. Additionally, the company has requested the use of ELB (Edge Light Blocking) to prevent light leakage around the camera lens.
Due to BOE's production difficulties, it may not be able to participate in mass production of OLED panels for the first iPhone 15 shipments. Rather, the company may end up producing displays for Apple to use when performing repairs.
It's likely that Apple will divide up orders between Samsung and LG if BOE doesn't make the cut but the split is unclear.
