Apple Expected to Launch Foldable Device as Early as 2026

Apple could launch its first foldable device by as early as 2026-2027, according to a new report from The Elec. The foldable would purportedly be in the 7-inch to low 8-inch range, but it's unclear if it will be an iPhone or iPad device.

There is also an interpretation that the concept of Apple's late 7-inch to early 8-inch foldable product is to replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini model, which is a tablet. Among the iPad series, the 8.3-inch mini model is the smallest. The remaining models include 10.2 inches (9th generation), 10.8 inches (Air), 11.0 inches (Pro), and 12.9 inches (Pro). This year, the 11.0-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro will use organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) for the first time. Conversely, there is a counterargument that Apple's late 7-inch to early 8-inch foldable product will not be a replacement for the iPad mini, based on the fact that Apple is also working on an OLED development project for the iPad mini model.

Late last year, Samsung and LG sent Apple samples of their foldable panels in the high 6-inch and high 7-inch range. However, if Apple does go ahead with a foldable device, Samsung is expected to be the primary supplier, as it has accumulated mass production experience with the Galaxy Fold. It would likely produce panels from its 6th generation A3 or A4 OLED line.

The Elec also says that Apple, Samsung, and LG have been in discussions about Ultrathin Glass (UTG), the foldable panel cover window, and the hinge concept, with each company having different opinions on the technology.
