Apple will update its iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus with new LTPO displays that support ProMotion and Always-On, according to a new report from TheElec.

It has been assessed on the 27th that it is highly likely that all four models of the iPhone 17 series, which Apple will release next year, will apply the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) method organic light-emitting diode (OLED). Up until the iPhone 16 series, which will be released in the latter half of this year, the OLED TFT method is divided into two types of LTPO and two types of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS). The LTPO method, which reduces leakage current and supports low power consumption, is a higher-end technology than the LTPS method.

There was speculation that Apple would maintain its use of LTPS until the iPhone 18 as display supplier BOE can not yet produce LTPO displays; however, Apple purportedly believes that the iPhone 17 will need ProMotion to be competitive. If BOE does not have its LTPO production ready, Apple will use other suppliers for the panel.

An industry insider said, "Since the product changes for last year's iPhone 15 and this year's iPhone 16 series are minor, the iPhone 17 series must differentiate by applying LTPO to even the lower lineups. If BOE lacks LTPO technology, Apple will apply LTPO to all four models of the iPhone 17 series without BOE."

Even if BOE misses out on iPhone 17 orders, it's still expected to land orders for the lower cost iPhone SE 4, as well as other legacy iPhone models. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to use the same 6.1-inch display panel as the iPhone 14.
