Apple is expanding its presence in China with new applied research labs, according to a new report from China Daily.

The company told the publication that it will enhance the capabilities of its existing Shanghai applied research lab to 'support the reliability, quality, and material analysis for all product lines.'

"We have already invested 1 billion yuan ($139.4 million) into applied research lab in China. And with the new expansion plan, our investment will continue growing," said Isabel Ge Mahe, vice-president and managing director of Apple Greater China.

Additionally, Apple plans to establish a new research lab in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, later this year. The lab will provide support for employees in the region and deepen collaboration with local suppliers. It will also strengthen testing and research capabilities for products like iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro.

"We choose to have the two applied research labs in China, because of the country's manufacturing prowess and local suppliers' strong presence," Isabel Ge Mahe said.

According to Ge Mahe, Apple has doubled the number of research and development staff in China over the past five years.
