Ring has unveiled a new generative AI feature called "Video Descriptions," which is designed to give users more context about what's happening at their front door or around their home. The new capability will deliver detailed, real-time text descriptions of motion events directly to a user's iPhone or other devices.
Video Descriptions uses AI to analyze footage from Ring doorbells and cameras, then sends a concise summary in the notification. Instead of a generic motion alert, users might see a message like, "A person is walking up the steps with a black dog," or "Two people are peering into a white car in the driveway." Ring says the feature is designed to describe only the main subject and action, allowing users to quickly determine if something needs their attention.
The company also teased future plans for its AI platform, including a feature that will group multiple motion events into a single, cohesive alert. Another planned enhancement, custom anomaly alerts, will learn a property's normal routines to send notifications only for unusual activity. This effort aligns with a broader push into AI from parent company Amazon, which recently unveiled its new Alexa+ assistant.
The new Video Descriptions feature is beginning to roll out in beta today for Ring Home Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. It is enabled through the Ring app and works with all currently available Ring doorbells and cameras.
