Tim Cook on Apple's New iPhone Battery Case: 'It's Kind of Nice to Have'

Posted December 10, 2015 at 3:17am by
Tim Cook offered his thoughts on the new iPhone Battery Case and explained the company's design choices in an interview with Mashable.

“You know, I probably wouldn’t call it ‘the hump,'” said Cook, who is aware of criticisms over the battery case which features a large rectangular bump at the back.

He notes that unlike other cases, Apple's is easy to put on and take off.

“One of the real insights here is, have you ever used other cases and tried to get them on? If you make this solid all the way across [pointing to the top portion of the fluoroelastomer casing] in order to get it on, you’d find it very difficult to get it on and off.”

Cook also noted that those who charge their phone every day probably don't need the case but if you are on an overnight trip it could come in handy.

"If you’re charging your phone every day, you probably don’t need this at all. But if you’re out hiking and you go on overnight trips… it’s kind of nice to have."

It can be forgiven the case is designed this way for a reason, but for me I'll stick to motion power rather than make my iPhone any taller than it already is.

Sorry, what do you mean by motion power?

Agree with evryone, it could have been so much smoother, nicer looking and comparingto my 10400mAh backup-battery this one is toy. The only positive is that the phone probably feels better, more secured in hand than without the case....

if it charged at 2.1 amps I would gladly spend the money,The case is ugly... only advantage is ease of removing the case and its "smart" capability... Fast charging is a way more important aspect for, me.I've also come to love the micro USB port on all the current power cases. There's always a way to charge my phone because I have a choice in cables.

Was this designed by Apple themselves for their own iPhones? There are many better looking battery cases out there.

Agree. Might as well make a thick phone with battery that can last whole day. Even a 10,000 mAh battery can last me a day of usage. Have to constantly charge the phone from the power outlet. Battery life for all smartphones really suck badly

The design of this case is ugly.

Indeed. If Steve is still around, this case would never had been designed in the first place. However there are still a lot of 'smart' people who would still love it

Should make it 10000mAh rather than 1877mAh for USD99. Also iMac design, thin edge and thick in the middle with beatiful curve unlike this battery case would be much better.
