How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.0]

Posted June 23, 2010 at 2:43am by iClarified
These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0 using PwnageTool for Mac.

● If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
● If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
● If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
● As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac)

IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

Step One
Make a folder called "Pwnage" on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. PwnageTool 4.0, found here or here

You will also need the 4.0 iPhone firmware.
4.0.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox since Safari often auto extracts it!

" If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode." I jailbroke with Spirit, on 3.1.3 and 5.21.01 - can I unjailbreak, I have my pre-jailbreak ispw file, and re-jailbreak on 4.01 with this process?

Nobody every explains the "Re-enable functionality" option. These are features of iOS 4. Why do we have to RE-enable them? How did they get disabled?

Simple question: Can I use this guide to update to 3.1.3? I have an iphone 3G on OS 3.0 - but i've heard that OS 4.0 is slow on the 3G, so I think I'll try 3.1.3 instead.

ear all I try the tuto and doesnot work. itunes 9.2 4.0 first ddownload all Firmware and redshow. when i try to use Redshow, saying unable to recognize the firmware try with PWNAGE and itunes dont work. i am sure you need to check the bootloader. it looks like a big issue. i have 3 iphones 3g and 3gs AND both are not working with your tuto lucky i could bring it back to normal. SO GUYS BEFORE DOING IT MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A BACK UP OR YOU WILL BE USELESS ... So just wait for spirit or Wait for the blacknr .. mine advice cheers

Hello, sorry for asking again. I have an jailbroken 3G on 3.0(7A341) BB 4.26.08 and want to use pwnage 4.01 to upgrade to 3.1.3 not 4.0. When starting pwnage I can't choose 3G, only 3G(S). When choosing 3G(S) and locating the 3.1.3 FW for 3G pwnage tells me I've choosen the wrong FW. Can I use pwnage 4.0.1 for my plan? How do I manage?

You have to use pwnage 3.1.5 to update a 3G to 3.1.3

I have an US iPhone 3G tied to ATT but live in Mexico and want to us Telcel. I followed the instructions, everything went swimmingly. I used Pwnage to activate it (it was previously activated in the US on ATT) but when I put the Telcel sim card in I get no service bars, and now when I put the ATT card in too, i get no service bars and I can't make or receive phone calls. Any ideas?

I had the same trouble too. Hey, I live in Mexico aswell and the tutorial works great!, i just noticed some troubles running this new IOS 4.0 version. It is slower than 3.0 version which I was running. Some apps, still not have upgrades, so the iphone just not run them and it crashes Besides that everything works. Try jailbreaking again, but before that, make sure to turn off 3G data and take off the sim card, once you jailbreak it, restar it and then insert your sim. You won't have troubles after that.

the 3G(s) means it works with 3G or 3GS, so choose that one.

4.0 on 3G is painstaking, my phone is drags its ass even changing between settings to safari takes ages!! Remember kids unless you got a load of patience go ahead and upgrade otherwise, 4.0 is only meant to run on 3GSs or 4 smoothly
