These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on the 4.0 or 4.0.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows and iTunes 9.2. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.

This tutorial can be used to jailbreak before applying the UltraSn0w unlock. You can find instructions on how to apply the unlock here. It will also hacktivate your device for those not with an official carrier.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here or here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.0 firmware from below and place it in the same folder. If you would like to update to 4.0.1 you will need this firmware as well.

4.0.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw
4.0.1 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw

Extract the redsn0w executable from the RedSn0w zip file into the same folder.

Important: If you wish to remain at 4.0 then skip Step Two.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.0.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the 4.0 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Important: Select the 4.0 firmware ipsw even if you updated to 4.0.1.

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.0, 4.0.1]

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

Notice that RedSn0w has already selected to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPhone 3G run very slow.

Click the Next button to continue

Step Nine
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

You can now unlock your device using UltraSn0w by following these instructions.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

1) you guys need to add a part where you edit c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts to add the line "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com". This way the check of the firmware goes to a cydia site and thus won't fail. 2) it's possible to downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 and jailbrake with Redsn0w and unlock via Ultrasn0w.

Apple doesn't accept anything less than 4.1 right now... which can only remain your iPhone dumb for some time before the jailbreak comes out. So, what you have to do is to wait and constantly check the iPhone Tutorial on this site. Very soon it will be released. Hope this helps!

Sorry, don't think you can even do that (downgrading) except if you previously saved your SHSH Blobs on saurik server before upgrading to iOS 4.1 which I am pretty sure you DID NOT!
K
K - September 30, 2010 at 9:46pm
Hi.. Yes I think I have saved them.. Coz I remember.. Once when I opened Cydia it showed a msg saying something like "yes make my life easier.." and I did select it.. So I believe I have done that.. So how do I go about it.. Emmanuel I appreciate u following up on this :-) Thanks!
K
K - October 1, 2010 at 2:38pm
Thanks Emmanuel... Is there any way I can confirm if the SHSH blobs were successfully saved? Using Cydia? or sum other method?
Emmanuel
Emmanuel - October 1, 2010 at 7:43pm
I don't think there is any other way to figure that out right now since you have already upgraded to 4.1. So, just follow the instructions on the links, maybe Cydia successfully saved them for you. Good luck :-) !

This is after Itunes say´s its checking with Apple! I have the latest Itunes. I have also tried to upgrade but it still doesn´t work. Use a browser like Firefox to download the ipsw. Other browsers interpret the ipsw file wrong.

I'm thinking of going back to 3.1.3. Do I follow the same procedure as above and just use the 3.1.3 firmware? Will there be any problems going back to 1.3.1 from iOS4? Any help will be appreciated.

Since my update to 4.0.1. My battery drains RAPIDLY...It goes to 10% after 1.5 hours of useage. Its very frustrating and im thinking of going back to 3.1. Is anyone else facing similar problems?
Rish
Rish - October 23, 2010 at 10:00am
The drain happens when you have push turned on for emails and you dont have data plan. The happened with me earlier this year. I researched a lot but turning push email resolved my problem. Looks like it keeps looking for network which drains battery too fast. let me know if this fixes ur issue.
