Amazon is reportedly developing a smartphone to rival the iPhone and other Android devices, according to Bloomberg.

Foxconn International Holdings Ltd. (2038), the Chinese mobile- phone maker, is working with Amazon on the device, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. Amazon is seeking to complement the smartphone strategy by acquiring patents that cover wireless technology and would help it defend against allegations of infringement, other people with knowledge of the matter said.

Of course they are. Isn't everyone? Anyone that wants to be a player in the tech world is coming out with a Smartphone/Tablet to compete with Apple. However, unless it's super cheap with features that beat the variety of Android phones, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Very, very difficult! Big boys like Sony/Ericksson, Nokia are stumbling all over, and Google is still going nowhere with on hardware side. If Amazon thinks they can tackle the problem by slapping together some run-of-the-mill piece with android OS, they will burn their hard earned money. Another problem is carrier incentive. If carriers cannot brand their phone, they won't carry, except the iPhone.
