The new Apple iPhone 5s may be in very short supply when it launches on September 20th due to 'terrible' production yields on the fingerprint scanner, says Jefferies analyst Peter Misek.
Forbes reports on an investor note from Misek in which the analyst lowers his fiscal 2014 EPS estimate from $38.78 to $37.95 vs. the Street’s $42.66 "due to the iPhone 5c being priced like Apple's prior generation handsets rather than at a new level and our checks indicate 5s supply constraints due to poor yields on the fingerprint sensor."
Misek cut his price target for AAPL from $450 to $425. He estimates that there will only be 5-10 million iPhone 5s units built in calendar Q3 and his 20-25 million units estimate for Q4 is exposed down to 15 million.
For the iPhone 5c, Misek estimates 20 million will be made in calendar Q3 and 30 million will be manufactured in Q4. He does not believe the device will be well received in China due to its high cost, small screen, and plastic construction and has slashed his fiscal 2014 iPhone sales predictions from 162 to 147 million units accordingly.
Misek previously estimated that 55 to 60 million iPhones would be manufactured in Q4. That's now been revised down to 48 to 60 million with nearly the entire downside coming from the iPhone 5s. Misek says his checks indicate that fingerprint sensor yields "have been terrible".
This may be one of the reasons Apple is not offering pre-orders on the new flagship device. Will be you be lining up for one? Let us know in the comments!

I don't think they need to worry about selling out. There is still no reason to upgrade from the iPhone 4s.

Yes! Our current phone is the iPhone 4. The 5s is a great upgrade for us, so we plan to upgrade as soon as they are available.

Apple is laughing at you now - September 15, 2013 at 7:51am
I doubt the short supply is going to affect anyone, anyone with an iPhone 5 would have to had recent brain surgery to even contemplate dumping £500 on a phone that is no different to the last.
Ios7 is lovely and its free, that's my upgrade right there!

Just a wild guess, but do you think that maybe Mr. Misek and Apple marketing have talked with each other about strategies ?
Something doesn't seem legit here..."terrible" yields?

Really?? - September 13, 2013 at 11:12pm
Finger print scanner??
I had that on my HP ipaq back in 2002, palm pilot
And certain laptops did also....
64 bit! Yup! My Nintendo 64 had that as well in 1996. What is new about this phone??
I use apple products everyday, this is nothing new, where is the innovation?
Want good pictures? Buy a camera!!!!!
If its so great and not about money, buy me one and I'll use it!!

you HP laptop fingerprint tech its a gimmick, the one in the iPhone 5s its another thing, it used RF to scan the fingerprint, its the same tech you find in high end fingerprint scanners... And you nintendo 64 its not 64-bit, the 64 in the nintendo stands for 64 MB of video at that time... the camera its a bonus, you can not be with an DSLR the whole time but you could be easily with your phone the whole day... so at the end, you don't know what your talking about...

Go use your HP ipaq or Nintendo 64 as a mobile smartphone then. If you don't see any appreciable difference in the technology then please use them!

Every 8 years GM redesigns the body of their models to the changes in times, every year of that body style they make minor changes to cosmetics of body and interior. Apple does the same thing with minor cosmetics and and upgrades to inner working but keeps with a style that is selling. Android builds toys for children that need change everyday. They jump to build a product with many bells and whistles to keep the children happy. You have to look at the specs of a iPhone. It's a phone above all, and that you can view emails, read news, play some music, take some photos while on the go. I'm sorry you think iPhone needs to be bigger. Apple said if you want a bigger device to play games on by a mini. If you want a great phone buy a iPhone. If you want toy with bells and whistles buy a android

The iPhone is the STANDARD by which ALL other smartphones are measured. SCREW the competition - if it AIN'T broke ... DON'T FIX IT!
As far as iPhone 6 is concerned ... make it DRAMATICALLY better!

Trucker - September 13, 2013 at 8:20pm
Iphone 5s really is dramatically better. It has 64 bit and second processor. SCREW THE COMPETITORS AND CHILDREN.

daMacNut - September 13, 2013 at 9:09pm
Yup! And with iOS 7 you virtually have an ALL-NEW iPhone! But these improvements won't satisfy analysts though ... you need a 5" screen and $300 price tag (off contract) to be "successful" ... ;-)

MuertoDiving - September 14, 2013 at 2:12am
5' display and 300 usd off contract... thats never going to happen coming from apple premium devices, its not even possible, the iPhone 5S cost to apple more than that just to be build it... so my advice get a cheap android instead and keep the other 300 usd you saved for next year so you can buy another one cuz it will not last more than that...

Android doesn't build anything. It's only the software and its variants running on a multitude of devices made by many manufacturers. Google itself who created the Android OS markets devices under its logo, but even these are made by other manufacturers, like ASUS, LG, etc. The only devices running pure Android are the ones with the Google Nexus brand.

There's been a lot of evolution in the iphone from the first one to the present. However, from one model to the next the changes have been smaller. The current 5S represents the least amount of change from the previous model as any of those before it.

Those who say no innovation should go and review the 5s specs again. It has caused Samsung to quickly release a statement saying they will also be releasing 64 bit CPUs for their future mobile. The camera has a new flash and image processor and there's the fingerprint sensor and m7 co processor.
