Apple has confirmed its acquisition of the app search engine Chomp in a SEC filing, reports TNW.

Chomp is the search engine that finds the apps you want. Chomp's proprietary algorithm learns the functions and topics of apps, so you can search based on what apps do, not just what they're called. Try searching for "puzzle games", "kids games", "expense trackers", "tip calculators" or "chat" and start finding great apps.

TNW notes that Apple "filed a Form S-8 with the SEC, which must be submitted when it issues stock or stock options to employees, registering 3,207 shares to Chomp as part of its equity incentive plan. The proposed maximum offering price per share stands at $29.02, resulting in a proposed maximum aggregate offering price of $93,067.14. It appears that Chomp had a previous equity incentive plan before it was acquired by Apple. This plan was then assumed by Apple."

It's thought that Apple might be using Chomp for an iTunes redesign that would "enhance the speed and efficiency of finding new content, such as songs, videos, and applications."

You can download Chomp from the App Store for free.
