The Wallstreet Journal is reporting that Apple along with its suppliers are testing larger screens for both the iPhone and iPad.

Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has also asked for screen designs for a new tablet device measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally, they said. The current iPhone 5 has a four-inch screen, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. The iPad Mini, a stripped-down version of its tablet computer, has a 7.9-inch screen.

Obviously we do not know if this would ever make it into the market, but there has been rumors that Apple was testing larger displays on its devices.

Reportedly, Apple will be preparing to ramp up production for the new iPad later this month, which will continue to pack a 9.7-inch display with a lighter and thinner display structure. The new structure will integrate different touch sensors with a thin film instead of glass used in existing iPads.

Suppliers have also began producing components for the next iPhone last month and Apple has reportedly told its assembler to being shipping the new iPhones in late August. The low-cost budget iPhone is expected to launch as well with multiple color options and a nonmetal casing to differentiate itself form the high-end iPhone.
