Google has confirmed the acquisition of WIMM Labs, a company that made an Android-powered smartwatch, reports GigaOm. Initially, the company created an Android app platform for wristwatches; however, it eventually released its own smartwatch called the WIMM One.

Around a year ago, WIMM Labs ceased operations and posted the following on its site:

“During the summer of 2012, WIMM Labs entered into an exclusive, confidential relationship for our technology and ceased sales of the Developer Preview Kit (…) We’d like to thank all of our developers for their interest and willingness to experiment with our platform and look forward to exciting advances in the wearable market.”

Although there was some speculation that Apple might have been involved, it was Google who snatched up the company, says GigaOm.

The acquisition was facilitated by Woodside Capital Partners, and a source told me that at least some of WIMM’s staff stayed on to join Google. Most of WIMM’s senior staff still list their original company on their Linkedin profile, but a few have updated it with a mention of their new employer. A Google spokesperson confirmed the acquisition Friday afternoon.

Apple, Samsung, Google, and Microsoft are said to be working on wearable devices; however, it appears Samsung will be the first to unveil its smartwatch on September 4th.
