Why an 11.88-Inch Retina MacBook Air Makes Sense

Recent rumors have Apple releasing a 12-Inch MacBook Air with Retina Display. In October, a report from DisplaySearch predicted the laptop would sport a 2304x1440 resolution. A few days later, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo corroborated the report saying the 12-Inch MacBook would be released in Q2 or Q3 of 2014.

A recent report from analyst Daniel Matte suggests that rather than 2304x1440; a resolution of 2732 x 1536 would make perfect sense.

It turns out that an ~11.88” Retina MacBook Air with a 2732 x 1536 resolution happens to have the exact same pixel density as the 9.7” 2048 x 1536 Retina iPads: ~264 PPI. It would make sense for Apple to take advantage of the same display technology it has been utilizing for the 9.7” iPads by cutting their panels to this larger size. I suspect a new 11.88” Air would be a redesign of the 11.6” model with smaller screen bezels.

Matte believes that Apple will introduce the Retina MacBook Air alongside its current models and eventually consolidate its MacBook lineup to just three devices: the 11.9-inch, 13.3-inch, and 15.4-inch MacBooks.
