Apple is planning to build a significant new business in original television shows and movies, according to a new report from the WSJ.

The technology giant has been in talks with veteran producers in recent months about buying rights to scripted television programs. It also has approached experienced marketing executives at studios and networks to discuss hiring them to promote its content, said people with knowledge of the discussions. In addition to TV, Apple indicated to these people that it is considering offering original movies, though those plans are more preliminary.

Apple is reportedly planning to offer original scripted content by the end of this year. The programming would be available to Apple Music subscribers who pay $10/month for the service. The shows being considered are likely comparable to Westworld on HBO or Stranger Things on Netflix, says the WSJ.

One of the first shows to be aired by Apple is Carpool Karaoke based on the Late Late Show bit by James Corden. It will consist of 16 half-hour episodes each with a different host. It's also been reported that Apple is working on a Planet of the Apps reality show, has a 'Vital Signs' show in the works based on Dr. Dre, and has signed that deal with Cash Money to fund a documentary.
