Apple has introduced support for Advanced Mobile Location in the first beta of iOS 11.3. AML allows emergency services to accurately locate a caller in danger.
Support for Advanced Mobile Location (AML) to automatically send a user’s current location when making a call to emergency services in countries where AML is supported.
Back in August, the European Emergency Number Association urged Apple to integrate Advanced Mobile Location for the safety of its customers. Google integrated AML in June 2016.
When an emergency call is made with a smartphone where AML is enabled, the phone automatically activates its location service during 20 seconds to establish its position and sends this information via a text message to the 112 and 999 service in the UK, with a radius of 50 meters or less for most calls (about 85% of locations). For that, the service uses GPS or Wifi – whichever is best at the given instance.
EENA's executive director, Gary Machado, is happy with Apple's announcement:
"This is huge news for people’s safety. It literally means saving more lives. From spring onwards, both Android and iOS devices will be able to provide accurate location to rescuers. It is now up to the countries to deploy AML everywhere in the world."
