Amsterdam Police have successfully ended a hostage situation at the Apple Store in Amsterdam by ramming the gunman with a vehicle as he tried to flee the store.

Earlier today the gunman took at least one individual hostage at the Apple Store on Leidseplein. Police later revealed that there were more individuals inside and some had managed to escape to safety.

Since the start of the hostage situation in the Apple Store on Leidseplein, several people have been able to leave the building. We do not want to share any information about the situation in and around the building at the moment.

It's unclear how exactly the situation unfolded or how the gunman ended up fleeing the store; however, video footage posted online shows two individuals running across a street, the second being the gunman. An SUV then drives into the street ramming the second runner.

Police have confirmed it was the gunman that was struck. A robot was used to check for explosives before medical personnel moved in.

We managed to stop the hostage-taker by hitting him as he ran out. Violent images of that collision can be seen. We now know that the suspect had no explosives on his body and medical personnel are now taking care of him.

The suspect has since been taken to hospital. For the time being, we are still conducting extensive research in the Apple Store on Leidseplein. After the press conference later, we will focus on the investigation and we will have more information during the day at the earliest tomorrow.

Video of the takedown is embedded below...
