The iPhone 8 may suppress notification sounds when you're looking at it, according to new references found in the HomePod's firmware.

Developer Guilherme Rambo tweets, "What @jsnell talked about on the last @_upgradefm is true: the iPhone will suppress notification sounds if you're looking at it"

Rambo points to a TLAttentionAwarenessObserver and an _updateAudioVolumeDynamicallyForAlert function spotted in the code. See the screenshots below.

The HomePod firmware has already confirmed a facial recognition feature for the upcoming iPhone 8 that may even work while the smartphone is lying flat; however, there is still some debate on whether the device will have a Touch ID feature. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that Apple has cancelled plans for Touch ID and will rely exclusive on Face ID (Pearl ID) for the new smartphone.

Production of the iPhone 8 is believed to be on schedule for a September unveiling although the device may be in short supply at launch.
