Apple iPhone on 2.5G EDGE vs. 3G HSDPA

Here is an interesting video showing the speed difference of an Apple iPhone on 2.5G EDGE versus 3G HSDPA.

The HSDPA speeds are simulated by connecting the iPhone via Wi-Fi to an iMac with an HSDPA modem.

so in other words we gonna need to buy a hole new iPhone for 3g ....

3G/HSDPA support would require a different radio chipset altogether from the one in the current 2.5G iPhone, so Apple has to make a new iPhone to support the newer protocol.

Does the 3G HSDPA iphone come from a software upgrade from the old iphones or is a new iphone all together?
