Lance Fetters has released an update to Backgrounder which adds an Auto Detect background method for iOS 4

Backgrounder allows for total control of backgrounding on an iPhone/iOS-based device. With Backgrounder, *you* decide when an app should keep running, and when it should quit. Backgrounder provides true backgrounding; minimized apps can be made to continue to run as if they were still the foreground app.

Changelog svn.r513:
● NEW: Added background method "Auto Detect" (iOS 4.0+ only).
● FIX: Status bar icons now work with iOS 4.0+.
o Requires phoenix3200's libstatusbar extension.
● MOD: Removed use of preferences symbolic link, as it is not needed.
o The symlink ~/.backgrounderrc is no longer used, and can be manually deleted, if desired.
o Some apps still have issues due to Apple's sandbox; this will need to be fixed in a later release.
● MOD: Changed maximum supported firmware version to 4.0.1.
o Note that Backgrounder purposely blocks untested firmware versions; this is to prevent the possibility of crashes with newer firmware.
o Jailbreak users should *never* upgrade to new iOS firmware versions until they are certain that the firmware is jailbreakable and that the extensions they wish to use have been properly updated.

I have a 3GS with v4.0 running just fine. The latest Skype (2.0.1) doesn't stay signed-in when you background it. It's something to do with the JB, maybe. There was a message when I first ran it and it said something about non-modified phones only...but who reads them?? :)) Anyhow, I installed Backgrounder and now it's 100%. I can be playing a game or whatever and if someone calls me on Skype or sends an IM, I get it every time. As for the maps and calanders, they don't show as being backgrounded (native) on my phone, either. The phone and mail are but nothing else. And, you're right. you would have thought Apple would do a better job with the backgrounding. But, if you're making $15.4 billion dollars in 3 months, would you care?? ciao...

It seems with auto detect mode some of the apple apps don't natively stay open such as calendar, and maps. Anyone else seeing this?

Well, Apple force developers to "upgrade" apps to be able to multitask. That's a big mistake; because actually is the iOS self that should add multitasking to all existing apps (old and new) so you can just minimize or close apps, like you do in any computer.

i totally agree. i hate that every damn application is backgrounded but really only few applications are correctly done. i hate os4 and its retarded background method. also the folders only hold 12 apps? i miss categories.
