The Surface is a viable laptop and desktop replacement. It has the advantages of all three. Hopefully Apple follows suit! Unfortunately windows 8 blows and the hardware is not as solid at the ipad. I'm a huge apple fan and hope apple makes their version of the surface so that I no longer need a laptop, only need an external monitor and have one device that serves all purposes aside from a gaming or professional rig. As a regular PC the surface concept is ideal.

That's exactly what I said it's the future having everything in one tablet and I hope Apple will realize it before it's to late.

Don't get me wrong, I love my new iPad Air but I also believe that Microsoft understand where the future is going and the Surface is only the beginning, we are talking here about a fully functional PC in a tablet with extendable memory, a keyboard, USB, external monitor and other ports. For a while there was a rumor that Apple are working on a 13 inch super iPad but that's gone and if Apple can't see where the future is heading they will fall behind and that will be the undoing of Apple which better not happened because I kind of like all my Apple devices.

I don't think you really get the point of tablets. They're not a replacement for laptops or desktops, tablets are only entertainment devices and nothing more, they serve no place in the work place and can't provide the same efficiency that a laptop or desktop can and thinking so is just stupid. Microsoft has no clear future as they do not know how to market their products and when they come up with a good marketing strategy, their products do not deliver as expected as windows mobile is obviously a catastrophe as it stands and windows 8 is still widely hated by long time windows users everywhere. But otherwise optimism is good, maybe microsoft changes for the better, but I wouldn't put all my chips in one place (or any for that matter concerning microsoft)

I believe you are wrong and that the tablet will replace the laptops, in fact it's unavoidable.

Is there still a strong market for the Surface, or should Microsoft consider other directions? It is hard to see the value for the price compared to competitors.

Lol. The sales figures (or lack there of) speak volumes!
