iPhone OS 3.1 Goes Live - Do Not Update!

iPhone OS 3.1 Goes Live - Do Not Update!

Posted September 9, 2009 at 4:35pm by iClarified
Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1 which includes a number of new features; however, its important to remember NOT to update your firmware. If you update now you will likely lose your unlock and maybe even your jailbreak (iPhone 3GS). We will provide instructions once a safe upgrade path is available.

The new iPhone 3.1 firmware adds the following new features...

Genius Recommendations for Apps
Get recommendations for apps you might like based on apps you’ve already downloaded.

Genius Mixes
Have iTunes create up to 12 playlists based on what’s already in your library. You don’t even have to choose a sample song.

Download Ringtones Wirelessly
Choose from thousands of iPhone ringtones on the iTunes Store and buy them with a tap.

Organize Apps in iTunes
Use iTunes on your computer to drag apps onto virtual Home screens, then sync them to your iPhone.

AppleInsider has also posted a list of the fixes in 3.1:
* Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
* iTunes U content organization
* Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
* Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
* Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
* Option to "Save as new clip" when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
* Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
* Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
* Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
* Paste phone numbers into the keypad
* Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
* Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
* Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
* Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

The iPhone 3.1 update is available for free and the iPod 3.1.1 update is available for $4.95 to those who already purchased 3.0.

Guys, I have a 3GS iPhone that I could not rstore for a few weeks. Keep getting errors in ragne from #1 to 16##. the iPhone was stucked in DFUmode (iTunes cable logo). Now since the release of 3.1 iTune swas able to restore my iPhone! Although it is unlocked of course, I still feel more comfortable since it is restored and not stucked in DFU anmpre. Hopefully there wil lbe a jailbreak for 3. with yhe new baseband version soon.

Does this mean, It is risky to buy Iphone for now? I am keeping my hope that there is still a workaround but I have this impression that If I buy Iphone 3Gs NOW, I will not be able to jailbreak it ir unlock it. Please enlighten me.

1) Close iTunes (if open). 2) Go to Start then type 'Run' (not cmd, run is located C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\ Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\ 3) Paste this into the run box: C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1. This command allows iTunes to let you update your iPhone with the Custom IPCC file from your computer (attached in this email). 4) Download the updated AT&T carrier file from here (if you can't get the attachment from this email) 5) Open iTunes and plug in your iPhone 6) Hold shift and click "Check for Updates" 7) Select the IPCC file downloaded above and complete the update (ATT_US.ipcc) - Use the drop down box to select file types, a carrier file selection should be available. 8) Allow it to upload 9) Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings - Your phone will reboot... 10) After your phone reboots go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network: and enter the MMS Settings below Here are the MMS settings: Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network: Only fill out the bottom settings, leave the rest as they are, empty or filled: MMS Settings: APN: wap.cingular Username: wap@cingulargprs.com Password: CINGULAR1 MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32 MMS Max Message Size: [Blank] MMS UA Prof URL: [Blank] 11) Restart your phone by holding power key and turning off, then turn back on and try see if the camera icon is your SMS message screen (Try send me a picture). It takes a minute for the first time, if your message fails, follow steps 9 & 10, you will only have to input username and password upon reboot, then try send it to me again. Those are the exact steps I used to do 3 iphone 3GS's - 1 jailbroken/ultrasn0wed and 2 regular stock AT&T phones and it worked. If you version of iTunes doesn't allow you to use 'run' the command line I sent you, it's because you have the latest iTunes...

So i tested this and am getting an error message when trying to install the ipcc file
Lee Craven
Lee Craven - September 9, 2009 at 10:04pm
What error? It should just upload to your phone...
Lee Craven
Lee Craven - September 9, 2009 at 10:16pm
If anyone has an error trying to do the 'run' command, don't use CMD use 'RUN' - in Vista type run and press enter, on XP click start, then select run on the right, include the EVERYTING including " " those but not the period, if you cannot run the command you have the latest version of iTunes, you need to look at the bottom of the blog post, uninstall your current iTunes and install the one listed there, it allows the carrier update.
Jason
Jason - September 9, 2009 at 10:28pm
Still reveiving an error. When its reading the IPCC file it spits out a 1119 error. i installed your version of itunes on a brand new machine that never had itunes. ran the command no problem. and still get error.

Lee Craven - September 9, 2009 at 10:49pm
All I can suggest is that you search for another ATT_US.ipcc - it worked for me though, it's just AT&T 5.0 carrier update, google another one. Are you using a 3GS? Thats all I tested it on mate.

Does jailbreaking really void warranty? I heard that if a jailbroken iphone be returned to its factory state using itunes, it can qualify for a warranty Are there really stores in US who sell iphone outright and unlocked? If I buy now, are iphones are already loaded with 3.1 baseband?
berkekibris
berkekibris - September 9, 2009 at 10:07pm
1. Jailbreaking DOES woid the phone's warranty. 2. To get your warranty back, you can just restore or update the phone to the latest firmware. 3. There are not stores that sell them, unless you find a little private shop, or buy it on ebay, etc. 4. Buying an iPhone now will most probably have the 3.1 firmware and whatever baseband comes with it.

Should there be any problem if I buy iphone 3gs now? With this upgrade to 3.1, are they really jailbreakable?

Hi, I was stupid enough to blindly upgrade to 3.1 from 3.0.1. Lost tethering. Can I go back to 3.0.1??
berkekibris
berkekibris - September 9, 2009 at 7:08pm
No, you can not go back. For now, you are stuck. Your best (and only) bet is to wait until the dev-team gets a jailbreak for you. Sorry.

damn, I downloaded the new Update on my 2G! and my entire unlock went down. Insert a valid SIM! I really do suck. What can I do gentlemen? Need my iPhone for tomorrow. Sometimes couriousity sucks.
Tony Shiavony
Tony Shiavony - September 9, 2009 at 6:21pm
Wrong Mister. Since 3.0 every update can destroy your unlock. But not the 2.x Updates!! Fail
unknown
unknown - September 9, 2009 at 7:39pm
the update replaces your baseband which cannot be downgraded. and since the basebase is new in this firmware the old 3.0/3.0.1 firmware wont support this new baseband. you pretty much are stuck with a phone you cannot jailbreak or unlock till dev team release new tools.
Iphone311
Iphone311 - September 9, 2009 at 7:56pm
You are out of luck until the Dev Team create an UNLOCK for it. Sorry dude. Curiosity killed the cat.

How did you get back 3.0?
Tony Shiavoni
Tony Shiavoni - September 10, 2009 at 7:41am
@Phil. Very simple. Just follow the tutorials here from this very site. I used the RedSnow Tutrial. Just choose your iPhone and which Unlock/JailSoftware (RedSnow or the other one). Follow instructions and voila. Back to 3.0 Tipp: The link there for the basebad (BL 3.9) doesn't work. Just google it and download it. Best of luck my friend.

So I currently own a iPhone 3GS, jailbroken, NO ULTRASN0W (unlock). I plan on stayin with crappy AT&T so i have no need to unlock using ultrasn0w. My question is, if i update to Firmware 3.1, can i still JAILBREAK. I understand since my baseband will update i would loose the unlock if i had it. But since i dont care about that and only interested in the JAILBREAK. Am I safe to jailbreak only right now? Or do i have to wait for the latest version of redsn0w to be released. Thanks everyone.
Eric
Eric - September 9, 2009 at 6:10pm
You need to wait a new Ultrasn0w for make jailbreaking again. Regards,
what
what - September 9, 2009 at 6:17pm
i think you mean redsn0w for jailbreaking. no, do not upgrade until the dev team says you can. does this even need to be asked?
djdjek
djdjek - September 9, 2009 at 6:17pm
No! You must wait for the Dev Team to release a new jailbreak for it. So Do not update yet.
Jason
Jason - September 9, 2009 at 6:20pm
I just wanted to make sure that was the case. Everything i read says if you do update your going to loose your UNLOCK. They dont say you loose the JAILBREAK. Since i dont care about unlock i wasnt sure if i could still jailbreak. I appreciate the info.
djdjek
djdjek - September 9, 2009 at 6:22pm
You will loose your jailbreak.

I have 3 iphones: 2G, 3G, and 3GS. I tried to ungrade my 3G with 3.1, then I lose Jailbreak (Cydia). If u want to keep Cydia, wait for new Redsn0w.

djdjek - September 9, 2009 at 5:30pm

I think it's stupid that Apple is making ipod owners pay for the small firmware updates, especially when its mostly bug fixes.

you can blame US accounting laws for that.
Chris Wanja

You may want to adjust your title so that it says "unlocked phones and jailbroken phones do not update". your title is misleading as saying that any one shouldn't update to 3.1

Not true. Im a daily user, and I have a 3GS thats not jailbroken. I Jailbroke my 3g, but the 3GS has all the features i was jailbreaking for in the first place. And I dont mind paying for apps that are worth while.
