The iPhone is Now Available Contract Free From the Apple Store

Apple is now selling the iPhone without an AT&T contract or ID at any Apple Store in the United States.

Gizmodo received a copy of the internal documentation that reads, "Effective immediately, customers purchasing iPhone as device only at full price are no longer required to have an AT&T account or provide a form of ID. Device only full price iPhone slaes are limited to one per person per day."

The price is $499 for the iPhone 3G 8GB, $599 for the iPhone 3GS 16GB, and $699 for the 32GB model.

Of course, these devices will be sold with the latest baseband which is not yet unlockable; however, you can use RedSn0w to perform a tethered jailbreak.

Hello Everybody, I read this thread this morning and realize that it's not an amazing new as it looks like. There is not such a bargain on Apple Store Site. In fact, I wrote an email to Jesus Diaz @ Gismodo.com site asking for more details about it because there is not any official fact about it on Apple.com Below you can find my email to Jesus Diaz. Hello Jesus, I wonder where did you get this information from. I mean, I went to Apple Online Store and I did not found such an option to buy an iPhone without AT&T Contract. If its possible to get it on an alternative way without a contract !!! Will it be only an option to those who only wants their iPhones for a PrePaid or Pay on the Go Account. Can you clarify this info or facts please. It doesn't worth if iPhone still locked or attached to a single carrier. Thanks, ROGELIO ENRIQUE SANCHEZ INDOMIE EU - Gerente Tel. Fijo: +57 5 361-4731 Tel. This could mean only 2 things. 1-new iPhone coming and they need to get rid of stock. 2-sales are going down and they need to push a "new" marketing tool. either 1 or 2 the fact seems as iPhone sales are slowing down.

No, you cant use any SIM, they are still locked to AT&T. It just means you dont have to pay for the contract. Yes, you can jailbreak it, but jailbreak and unlock are different things. If you want an iPhone on a different carrier, buy an old one.
