Apple is now selling the iPhone without an AT&T contract or ID at any Apple Store in the United States.
Gizmodo received a copy of the internal documentation that reads, "Effective immediately, customers purchasing iPhone as device only at full price are no longer required to have an AT&T account or provide a form of ID. Device only full price iPhone slaes are limited to one per person per day."
The price is $499 for the iPhone 3G 8GB, $599 for the iPhone 3GS 16GB, and $699 for the 32GB model.
Of course, these devices will be sold with the latest baseband which is not yet unlockable; however, you can use RedSn0w to perform a tethered jailbreak.
This could mean only 2 things.
1-new iPhone coming and they need to get rid of stock.
2-sales are going down and they need to push a "new" marketing tool.
either 1 or 2 the fact seems as iPhone sales are slowing down.
No, you cant use any SIM, they are still locked to AT&T. It just means you dont have to pay for the contract.
Yes, you can jailbreak it, but jailbreak and unlock are different things. If you want an iPhone on a different carrier, buy an old one.
"you can use RedSn0w to perform a tethered jailbreak." Someone please clarify! This is still not possible on a new 3gs running 3.1.3 with baseband 05.12 correct? Just need some clarification. Because it is so misleading to say buy a contract free 3GS and you can jailbreak it.
I called the Apple store about 6 months ago and asked for their price of iphones and was given these same prices to purchase without a contract. How is this new?
haha...finally apple realized that its not such a bad idea if someone wants to pay $500 upto 700 for a phone...WTF@ who wouldnt wanna do that........such a rip off, thats more than they were 3 years ago when they came out lol
