Russia Fines Apple for Violation of Data Storage Law

Russia has fined Apple for allegedly refusing to store the data of Russia citizens within the country, reports Interfax.

Based on the Russian report, it appears that a judge found Apple guilty under part 8 of article 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (failure by the operator, when collecting personal data, of the obligation to ensure the recording, systematization, accumulation, storage of personal data of citizens of the Russian Federation using databases located on the territory of the Russian Federation). The company was fined 2 million rubles.

In its defense, Apple said the corporation is not responsible for data collection in Russia.


"It is not the person who collects data in the Russian Federation that is being held liable. Apple Inc. has been brought to court, and Apple Distribution is responsible for data processing."

A representative of Roskomnadzor told the judge that the administrator of the Apple site where the data is collected is Apple Inc.

"There is no information about other legal entities on the company's website, so we believe that the protocol was drawn up correctly."

Notably, Apple Rus LLC officially notified Roskomnadzor in December 2018 that the data of Russia users had been localized to the territory of the Russian Federation.
