My JAILBROKEN iPad 3 (WiFi) is currently running ios 6.0.1. Following the instructions posted in the "How to jailbreak iPad..." post, I attempt to restore my iPad using the Shift+restore method. Every time I try to do this I get the error message "The iPad **** could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." How can I resolve this?

Apple only signs(verifies on their server) ipsw's for so long. They are currently only signing 7.0.4 for the iPad 3 possibly as low as 7.0, not 100% on that. You could install the latest ios however and jailbreak with the latest evasion release. Hope this helps.
