To type the British Pound symbol (£) on a Mac with a US keyboard layout, press Option and 3 at the same time. If you are using a British keyboard layout, you can type the symbol by pressing Shift and 3.

You can also access the symbol through the Character Viewer by pressing Control, Command, and Space simultaneously, then searching for pound. Additionally, most applications allow you to find the symbol by selecting Emoji and Symbols from the Edit menu.
