My friend had a jailbroken and unlocked iphone 3gs on IOS 4.1 and wanted to upgrade. I put it through tinyumbrella and found shsh blobs only for 4.1 and 6.1. I upgraded to 6.1 successfully and jailbroke but could not unlock. I then successfully reinstalled 4.1 and could again jailbreak but the phone stays in no service. In the heat of the moment we tried many things, but mainly installed ultrasnow from Cydia. The baseband is 0615.
Ideally he would like to jailbreak and unlock on 6.1, if not, on 4.1 and go back to what he was yesterday...Sorry to ask this but we found nothing too clear on how to go around it and don't want to make it any worse. Thanks a lot,

Thank you all for the tips, but nothing worked. My friend's 3GS was weird, we couldn't unlock it in any way. (I successfully did so with both my iphone and ipad, but nothing worked on this phone). Finally he sent it to a "pro" and he could manage to unlock it, but we don't know what tools he used. But for sure with the tools we all mention here it was no use.

Note : If you upgrade your iphone 3gs firmware, you will lose your unlock stage and your iphone 3gs gets locked again . Better, you can use Remote unlocking service to unlock it . It is one of the permanent solution to unlock iPhones. It is available at Unlock-zone.com

Well, my friend got to install 6.1 on his 3GS. He hasn't unlocked yet since he went on a trip. I already advised him to follow the Ultrasn0w tutorial to do it.
aniel, just a doubt: you told me to restore to 6.1.2...could he do that even if Tinyumbrella didn't get the 6.1.2 shsh blobs ? (he only has 4.1 & 6.1 saved)

I just managed to work things right for same model iphone 3gs and firmware update:
Follow these steps:
1.Restore your iphone 3gs with itunes to 6.1.2
2.Use redsnow 0.9.15b3 to jailbreak ==> Extras===> Select ISPW====>Select===> Restore.ispw====> Select OK===> Back====>Jailbreak====> Only select insyall ipad baseband and NOT cydia.
3. After Completion your iphone will be activated. Wait more steps.
4. Download Evasi0n and run the tool with your iphone 3gs attached.
5. Dont do anything and let it again jailbreak 6.1.2
6. Once Done you would get Cydia on the homepage.
7. Open cydia and install source: repo666.ultrasn0w.com
8. Install ultrasn0w on iphone 3gs from cydia.
9. Your iphone 3gs is unlocked and any sim is activated.
10. Do a network setting reset again later for steady Network.
11. Done Cheers!

Follow the iClarified wizard:
1) Update to 6.1
2) Jailbreak your device
3) Unlock using Ultrasn0w tutorial
You should be able to have it unlock installing Ultrasn0w
