GAMEized, the developer behind the iOS game FingerKicks, is speaking out on iOS game piracy and questioning why Apple's Game Center supports pirated apps.
In a post on their blog, GAMEized reveals how excited they were about app sales based on the number of Game Center players, only to find that most were pirated players.
Because Apple only provides app sales data once per day, GAMEized used the Game Center leaderboards as a barometer for how many players had purchased FingerKicks. It was reasonable to assume that 5,000 players meant at least 5,000 sales, and since many customers don't use Game Center, the actual sales numbers might have been much higher.
It was a bitter disappointment when we discovered that the Game Center numbers weren't reflected in the iTunesConnect purchase reports. In fact, iTC reported only 160 purchases a substantially lower number than the number of people actually playing the game. How it that possible?
FingerKicks has now sold 1163 legitimate copies but there are at least 15,950 pirated copies being played regularly on Apple's Game Center. That equates to an astonishing 91% of downloads that are pirated.
Most bewildering of all is that even with all their rhetoric chastising piracy and intellectual property theft, Apple apparently has no functional counter-piracy safeguards in place on their Game Center essentially permitting users to play pirated software on their Game Center without any fear of reprisals or consequence.
Unfortunately, this type of piracy is commonly associated with jailbreaking because it requires a jailbroken device. Please help reduce this stigma by supporting the developers that work hard to bring you these apps.
You can purchase FingerKicks from the App Store for $0.99.
i will never pay for an app that the only thing you do is to flip ur finger to make a goal...
they dont let u try so you dont know wut the app does and at the end if u dont like it u dont get refunds...
so sorry developers but Installous is my first choice when i wanna get a new app..
app store is crap.. no trials, no refunds, etc etc
The golden rule of piracy is well know among the developers - the more popular its on the pirated market the better it sells. The living proof is big and mighty Adobe - we can all agree that it would not be as big and rich if Photoshop wasnt the most pirated software of all time.
Its hard fact to acknowledge officially but behind the scenes the developers and seeding and cracking their own stuff for better visibility and sales!
Apple needs to add more countries to iTunes.
I believe most ppl use pirated material due to the fact that they are unable to purchase anything from the App Store because their countries are not listed.
Maybe if Apple considers that then alot more ppl would be willing to support developers.
Bottom line, those 5000 people installed and tried the game finger whatever to find it was crap and then deleted it! Try before you buy so you don't get stuck with crap, that is my motto and I'm sticking to it!
It's kind of sad that most people only jailbreak to get things for free. It'd make sense to restrict use of Install0us, but then we'd be no better than Apple with their "no-jailbreaking" policy. I suggest a monthly subscription fee for Install0us, but only the developers can make that decision.
Eh well. I guess people will be people, and will ultimately NOT respect the hard work of others. I pay for every theme, app, and tweak I get, whether it comes from the App Store or Cydia. Unfortunate that the rest of the community cannot embrace this initiative.
I bought angry birds on my iphone and downloaded for free on my ipad because i already purchased but my gamecenter is different on my ipad therefore it is not that many pirated coppies your whole family of up to ten can use the game for 1 purchase of .99 cents
You can easily manage mulitple GameCenter accounts on one device. Plus when I purchase a game, I can install it with my Apple ID on all iDevices I own for my family to enjoy.
Sure, I bet some of those numbers that the developer mentions are taking part in piracy, but those numbers are not a true reflection of purchases by any means.
