Three independent sources close to Apple have confirmed a large screen iPod touch device to be released in the Fall of 2009, according to TechCrunch.
One of their sources has actually handled a prototype and says Apple is talking to OEMs in Asia now about mass production. The device is expected to launch with a 7-9 inch screen and basically be a large version of the iPod touch.
TechCrunch believes that the large form factor has been experimented with for a long time; however, there were concerns that users wouldn't like the device. With the popularity of the iTunes App Store its pretty clear the device would be a success.

It probably wouldn't function primarily as a phone, more like a small laptop/netbook.

i agree. this wouldnt be a phone definitely. its just too big but for a netbook, it would be the right size. :)

considering that the netbook segment is not dominated by anyone in particular and that apple is thinking ahead (likewise Bill Gates) at a time where pretty much everything can and will be controlled by a device, this large screen iPod is nothing but the following step towards achieving this idea and making it real. a small device, that can fit in your pocket and provides access to other electronic devices (through the apple remote and other software like that) maybe one day, sooner rather than later, we all shall have this device or similar ones to "take care" of our daily life events.
