Rumor Claims iPhone 17 Pro Will Get 8x Zoom, Pro Camera App, Extra Button, More

Apple's iPhone 17 Pro could be in for some major camera upgrades, including an 8x optical zoom and a new pro camera app, according to an anonymous tipster who contacted MacRumors. The source claims to be familiar with an iPhone 17 Pro commercial allegedly being produced by Slovenian company Division Film.

The source alleges the new Telephoto lens will support up to 8× optical zoom, a significant jump from the 5x zoom on current iPhone 16 Pro models. The lens can reportedly move, allowing for continuous optical zoom across different focal lengths.

Apple is also said to be working on an all-new pro camera app for both photos and videos, which would compete with popular third-party apps like Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro. The tipster did caution, however, that there's a chance Apple is planning a major update to its existing Final Cut Camera app instead of an entirely new one.


The source also claims an additional Camera Control button may be placed on the top edge of the device, complementing the existing button on the bottom-right edge of the iPhone 16 models.

The source also corroborated some existing rumors, claiming that talk of a new copper-like color option and a centered Apple logo are true.

The iPhone 17 Pro models are already expected to feature a redesigned rear camera system with a wide horizontal bar, so it would be a fitting year for some big upgrades. Other rumors have suggested the Pro models will feature a triple 48-megapixel rear camera system, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously said Apple will emphasize the phone's video recording capabilities. Separately, Front Page Tech's Jon Prosser has claimed the Camera app on the Pro models will let users record video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

MacRumors noted it could not independently confirm the information and that the claims should be treated with skepticism for now, given the anonymous source has no proven track record.
