Saurik has uploaded a new version of APT that has an optimized cache generator and greatly improves Cydia performance.
"I also uploaded a new version of APT I've been working on: it has an optimized cache generator and more error tolerant repository parsing."
When launching Cydia the next time you will be prompted to update to the new version of APT. Perform the install and enjoy the speed improvements!

and by the way... it seems this does more than speedup the load. I'm seeing debian packager pop up as things install as well. hadn't seen that before. Looks like there are a number of efficiencies added to this rev. Many thanks given... via an unconnected site. Thank you Saurik-

Big speed improvement. Launching Cydia went from about 2.5 minutes down to about 1 minute on a 3G.

Peter, if you search google or the usual forums, you should easily spot the fix.
The issue could be caused by a recent installation, not enough disk space on the root partition (Not Music/Video Partition), or a bad repository.
You will need to SSH into your iphone to fix the issue. Cydia isn't needed to install apps like SSH if not installed, you can simply install it manually.
You could also perform the repair using the MobileTerminal or by writing a bash script and running it from MobileTerminal. Again there are plenty of posts that will tell you how to fix it, this isn't the place for me to be posting that, so check the forums ;)

Working great! Down to about 15 seconds on a 3GS to load to main screen.

I thought something was different. Does loading time influence scrolling smotheness? Cause it feels much more fluent, just like tweetie...

be conscious or who you and what you reply to.
your comment, while insightful, appears to talk about how the original commenter was saying it sucks... while you seem to say otherwise. be sure to make that clear. Most folks won't understand.
just trying to help the noobs and unwittingly feeding the trolls. sorry folks
