Doesn’t Apple scan the box’ serial/IMEI/whichever code before sending off the package? Is the number then attached to the person/address sent to? If yes then Apple can just mark that phone as stolen and the person that stole it will never be able to use the phone.
I have heard of many Apple phones/products being stolen in one way or the other lately when sent to someone’s home.
So if and when I buy Apple products I go to the Apple store. If I preorder/order I make sure I get it sent to an Apple store and pick it up there. Last time I had to travel to another state to get my new iPhone but to me that is much less stress.

Why would they do that? Maybe the real one got switched for the fake in transit. I am pretty sure there would be a set of barcodes for every piece of the device and a certificate. It’s possible a batch go switched for the fakes and are being resold as new elsewhere. That’s my theory.
