The iPhone Dev-Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.9b7 which brings a new faster jailbreak option.
After some feedback on reddit, we've decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer "stashing" the applications by default during the redsn0w run. This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!). However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications. You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.
You can download the new RedSn0w updates from here.

The latest version of Redsn0w is 0.9.9b7b.
For those of you with iPhone 3GS that updated to iOS5 if you have the older bootrom you can Jailbreak and be free of any tethering. Units with the new bootrom began shipping around September 2009.
Details on identifying your bootrom can be found here:

You can also update from 4.3.3 to 5.0 using the latest Redsn0w and still use ultrasn0w to unlock. But you must preserve the baseband in order to do so. As the updated Baseband that's included with iOS5 is not compatible with either ultrasn0w. (nor Gevey SIM for you iPhone 4 users)

it looks like dev team unlocks are pretty much useless since we can BUY unlocked phones from apple. I am ALWAYS ready to be wrong but I think they're or should be just about done making unlocks. It's the jailbreak which is what's necessary and they will provide when they are ready and not sooner. If it's not soon enough then make your own software that nobody will pay for but everyone will complain about for some reason or other.

@Tom- Now you are saying that unlock is in the jailbreak itself and without it cannot unlock. You are half right. You cannot unlock without the jailbreak, but I repeat, go ahead and download the latest redsnow and find the unlock button. The unlock is not within nor part of the jailbreak itself. The jailbreak installs cydia through which a you are able to apply the ultrasn0w unlock which is DIFFERENT AND SEPARATE from the jailbreak.

no. ultrasnow is an unlock program available within cydia but they are separate. The code for unlocking is not written into cydia. I can uninstall the ultrasnow666 repository and still have my jailbreak and cydia. Furthermore the jailbreak is not cydia, jailbreak is the software which allows you to install Cydia which in turn allows you to use yet different software which can be used to unlock, if your iphone's baseband is compatible. And I did make a mistake... I misspoke earlier because you actually can unlock without jailbreak they make sim card adaptors for such a purpose. I don't believe you need to be jailbroken to use those. I might be wrong on that point.

Budsal is right. jailbreak and unlock are not the same. Read here from the experts. http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm. if link doesn't work lookup www.hackint0sh.org and get informed. PEACE!

So when do you think we can expect a Jailbreak (Untethered hopefully) for the 4S?

When it is ready and not a moment sooner.
Waiting patiently.
