Reform Government Surveillance, a group of major tech companies has published an open letter to the US Senate urging them to bring government surveillance reform, specifically to pass a bill that would bring stronger provisions to the USA Freedom Act.

The same group published a similar letter back in December urging for reform.

Dear Members of the Senate:

It’s been a year since the first headlines alleging the extent of government surveillance on the Internet.

We understand that governments have a duty to protect their citizens. But the balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual. This undermines the freedoms we all cherish, and it must change.

Over the last year many of our companies have taken important steps, including further strengthening the security of our services and taking action to increase transparency. But the government needs to do more.

In the next few weeks, the Senate has the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and pass a version of the USA Freedom Act that would help restore the confidence of Internet users here and around the world, while keeping citizens safe.

Unfortunately, the version that just passed the House of Representatives could permit bulk collection of Internet “metadata” (e.g. who you email and who emails you), something that the Administration and Congress said they intended to end. Moreover, while the House bill permits some transparency, it is critical to our customers that the bill allow companies to provide even greater detail about the number and type of government requests they receive for customer information.

It is in the best interest of the United States to resolve these issues. Confidence in the Internet, both in the U.S. and internationally, has been badly damaged over the last year. It is time for action. As the Senate takes up this important legislation, we urge you to ensure that U.S. surveillance efforts are clearly restricted by law, proportionate to the risks, transparent, and subject to independent oversight.

The letter is signed by prominent tech CEOs, including leaders from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, AOL, and LinkedIn

A letter won't do a thing unless there's a $500 million bribe-I mean, campaign contribution-along with it.

It's US government tax law loopholes that lets them keep money in other countries. They're basically allowing it to happen. You'd probably do the same thing if you had a large company that made big money. If the government wasn't so ass backwards and the people that run it weren't so corrupt maybe apple and other companies wouldn't have had to do what they do with their money In the first place. Or have to ship manufacturing overseas. Which was caused by the government. Everything evolving the whole US government and their tax system is flawed to begin with. Same with this surveillance BS. I believe they and everyone else has the right to fight this. The government is sticking their dirty hands and eyes into too much of out lives to begin with. If you like being watched, tracked or spied on 24/7 that's your right I guess. If businesses or even normal people don't fight this it's only going to get worse and our so called "freedoms" with be nonexistent before we know it. Ya most of apples products are still made over in china but at least now they're spending money to bring jobs and some of their product manufacturing back to the US. At least they're bringing something back to this country.

The corporations are the government. Where have you been the last 40 years? The corps have exactly the government they want.
