App Store Ecosystem Facilitated $1.4 Trillion in Developer Billings and Sales in 2025

Apple's App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales worldwide in 2025, according to a new study from Analysis Group commissioned by the company. Apple says developers paid no commission to Apple on more than 90 percent of those billings and sales, while the overall size of the App Store ecosystem has nearly tripled since 2019.



Physical goods and services accounted for the largest share of activity, totaling $1.1 trillion in 2025. Categories such as grocery delivery, food ordering, retail shopping, and travel helped drive that growth. Digital goods and services generated $149 billion in billings and sales, led by games, enterprise apps, and video streaming services. In-app advertising revenue reached $151 billion.


The App Store averaged more than 850 million weekly users across 175 countries and regions, giving developers access to a global audience.

Artificial intelligence is also becoming a bigger part of the App Store ecosystem. More than 40 of the top 100 apps on the App Store featured consumer-facing AI capabilities in 2025, and those apps saw four times more growth in billings than other top 100 apps. Apple pointed to AI-powered features in health and fitness, photo and video editing, and productivity apps.

Developers are also using Apple's AI tools to build apps. Technologies such as the Foundation Models framework let developers use Apple Intelligence's on-device large language model in their apps while preserving privacy, working offline, and providing AI inference at no cost. Apple also highlighted new AI-assisted development features in Xcode 26, including agentic coding capabilities designed to help developers automate tasks and speed up development.

Regionally, App Store billings and sales have more than doubled in China and more than tripled in both the United States and Europe over the past six years. Retail remained the largest category across all markets, while spending patterns varied by region. Travel ranked as the second-largest category in markets including the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. In Korea, food delivery and pickup was the second-largest category, while grocery and food delivery ranked second and third in China.


Apple also pointed to its developer support efforts, including Apple Developer Centers in the United States, China, India, and Singapore that hosted thousands of developers in 2025. A new developer center in Berlin is scheduled to open later this year. Apple also continues to expand its network of Apple Developer Academies and Foundation Programs, which teach coding, AI, design, and business skills.

The report arrives just days before Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, where the company plans to preview new features, APIs, and technologies for developers.
