Apple says its new Siri AI features will not be available on iPhone or iPad in the European Union when iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 launch later this year, citing requirements under the Digital Markets Act.
The company says EU users will still be able to access Siri AI on macOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27. Developers based in the EU will also be unable to test or use the new Siri AI features for their iOS and iPadOS apps.
What's Delayed
According to Apple, EU users on iPhone and iPad will not get Siri AI's advanced capabilities at launch, including a dedicated app for revisiting conversations, an expanded Visual Intelligence experience, integrated writing tools, Siri mode in Camera on iOS, and other Siri AI features announced at WWDC26.
Apple says it does not currently have a timeline for bringing Siri AI to iOS and iPadOS users in the EU.
Apple's DMA Argument
Apple says it spent the past several months proposing ways to bring Siri AI to the EU while also supporting other virtual assistants. The company claims EU regulators rejected those proposals.
Apple argues that the European Commission's interpretation of the DMA would require it to give other virtual assistants direct access to private user data and the ability to control installed apps once Siri AI is available in the EU. Apple says that could include access to messages, purchases, files, and actions across apps without the level of visibility and control it believes users need.
Trusted System Agent Proposal
Apple says it proposed a system called Trusted System Agent as an intermediary that would let other virtual assistants access the same features and capabilities as Siri AI on devices in the EU. The company also proposed launching Siri AI in the EU while rolling out that system over an 18-month period.
According to Apple, the European Commission did not agree to any of its proposals. Apple says it will continue working on a way to bring the features to the EU, but for now there is no timeline for Siri AI on iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 in the region.
