Why Apple's OpenAI Lawsuit Doesn't Mention Jony Ive

Apple's sweeping trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI accuses several former employees of stealing confidential hardware information, but one of the AI company's most prominent hardware figures is nowhere to be found in the complaint: former Apple design chief Jony Ive.



Apple recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the startup and several former employees of orchestrating a campaign to steal proprietary hardware information, including confidential documents, CAD files, and product prototypes. The complaint specifically names former Apple executive Tang Yew Tan, now OpenAI's chief hardware officer, and former engineer Chang Liu, who allegedly exploited an authentication bug to access confidential network storage.


Ive now oversees the design of OpenAI's hardware lineup through his design firm LoveFrom after the company acquired io Products, the startup he co-founded. Although he left Apple in 2019, he remained a consultant until 2022 and has since become one of the public faces of OpenAI's hardware ambitions. Even so, Apple never mentions him in its complaint.

According to Mark Gurman, the most straightforward explanation is that Apple found no evidence tying Ive to the alleged misconduct. Gurman also notes that Ive was not deeply involved in the recruiting, engineering, or day-to-day operations described in the lawsuit. He suggests Apple may also have wanted to avoid turning the case into a public battle with one of its most recognizable former executives, which could have shifted attention away from the trade secret allegations. Gurman adds that Ive's close relationship with Laurene Powell Jobs may have been another factor Apple considered. Powell Jobs remains a friend of Apple CEO Tim Cook, was an investor in io Products, and continues to support LoveFrom.
