Apple Introduces iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable iPhone

Apple today introduced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, pairing a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch outer display in a titanium design powered by the A20 Pro chip. The device starts at $1,999 and will be available beginning October 23.

Foldable Design and Displays

When closed, iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display that is 50 percent larger than the display on iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both panels have the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally as the phone is opened or closed.



The two displays support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple has added a nano-texture finish to the inner panel to reduce glare and make the crease less visible, while a FaceTime camera remains hidden beneath that display when it is not being used. Support for Apple Pencil with USB-C is scheduled to arrive later this year.


Touch ID is built into the side button, and the phone can also be unlocked with an Apple Watch. Camera Control provides quick access to the camera and a new Siri Camera mode that lets Siri respond to what the user is viewing.



The enclosure is made from grade 5 titanium and uses a precision hinge assembled from more than 100 components. Ceramic Shield protects the back, Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display, and Apple rates the device IP68 for splash, water, and dust resistance. The inner display combines a scratch-resistant coating and nano-textured polymer cover layer with high-strength glass, custom adhesives, and a titanium support plate.

48MP Camera System

The rear camera system includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main camera captures 24MP images by default, supports full-resolution 48MP photos with zero shutter lag, and provides an optical-quality 2x Telephoto option. It also includes sensor-shift optical image stabilization, while the Ultra Wide camera supports macro photography.



A Center Stage front camera can frame photos and videos in either orientation without requiring the phone to be rotated. The folding design also enables Smart Take, which uses on-device models to capture a photo when subjects are posing; rear-camera selfies with a preview on the outer display; Duo Preview for showing subjects the live framing; Kid Cue animations; and Duo FaceTime, which lets another person join a call through the outer display.


Video features include 4K recording at 120 fps in Dolby Vision on the main camera, Cinematic effects that can be applied after capture at up to 60 fps, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse, and an updated Audio Mix with voice enhancement and music isolation.

iOS 27 and Multitasking

iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 and a layout adapted for its two displays. On the inner screen, users can place two apps side by side with Split View, run two windows from the same app, swap apps, and save app pairs. Controls, the Dock, app navigation, the status bar, and Dynamic Island have also been repositioned to preserve vertical space and respond as the device is folded or rotated.



Apple says its own apps are optimized for the new layout, while Netflix, Zoom, Slack, and Detail are among the third-party apps already adapted for the larger display. StandBy works on either screen even when the phone is not charging, with new Calendar and Weather faces joining the existing Clock, Modular, and Photos options.

Siri AI will roll out in beta with iOS 27 on September 14 for supported devices set to English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support planned for October. On iPhone Duo, Siri can use personal context and onscreen awareness, while Apple Intelligence also adds Spatial Reframing, Extend, an updated Clean Up tool, photorealistic Image Playground output, and Safari page-change notifications.

A20 Pro Performance and Battery Life

The A20 Pro chip uses a 2-nanometer process and is connected directly to a custom vapor chamber. Apple says the system delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. Its six-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, the seven-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient, and the dual 16-core Neural Engine provides twice the compute performance. Memory bandwidth has also increased by 50 percent.



A battery on each side of the device operates as a single system. Rated battery life reaches up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, or 24 hours when both displays are used equally. Wired charging can reach 50 percent in about 20 minutes, while MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50 percent in about 30 minutes.

The phone is eSIM-only worldwide. Apple's N1 wireless chip adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while the C2 cellular modem supports mmWave in the United States. A new iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 will allow customers on supported carriers to move the same phone number between two iPhones.

Pricing and Availability

iPhone Duo will be offered in star white and night sky with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage. Pricing starts at $1,999 in the United States, or $83.29 per month for 24 months. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, in more than 70 countries and regions, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. Another 28 countries and regions will receive the device on Friday, October 30.



Apple will also sell a two-part iPhone Duo Case in navy blue and sand for $79, along with an iPhone Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand in navy blue and taupe for $129. Both accessories support MagSafe, Qi2 25W, and Qi-certified chargers and will be available to order on October 16.
