iOS Code Reveals iPhone Duo Camera Sensors and Resolution Details

Posted 1 hour ago by

New details about all four iPhone Duo cameras have surfaced in iOS code, including their sensor identifiers and image resolutions. An analysis shared by pdfu examines camera configurations in iOS 27.1 and the iOS 27.2 release candidate, covering the two rear cameras, outer selfie camera, and under-display FaceTime camera.

The main camera is identified as IMX954, a quad-pixel sensor with 1.0-micron sub-pixels. Its largest configured sensor readout is 8448 × 6048, or about 51MP, while photo outputs are listed at 12MP, 24MP, and 48MP. That larger readout is distinct from the resolution of the final image.

For the ultra wide, the code lists IMX972 with 0.7-micron sub-pixels, which pdfu says also appears in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 lineups. It shares the main camera's largest readout and photo output sizes, though that maximum readout runs at 15 fps rather than 30 fps. Those figures apply to that sensor configuration, not the cameras' overall video recording limits.

On the outside, the selfie camera is identified as IMX915, codenamed Boston. It has a roughly 24MP maximum readout, with 12MP rectangular and 16MP square outputs. Apple advertises it as a 12MP Center Stage camera.

The under-display camera has a different set of configurations. Identified as IMX916 and codenamed Reno, it reads 2448 × 2448 pixels, or about 6MP, in every listed format. A larger 4896 × 4896 readout, roughly 24MP, is also recorded, but none of the examined configurations uses it.

Its output formats include roughly 4.4MP rectangular and 5.9MP square images, plus an upscaled 12MP mode. That mode takes a 1512 × 2016 crop, about 3MP, and doubles both dimensions to produce a 3024 × 4032 image rather than capturing 12MP natively.

Apple has not disclosed the inner camera's megapixel resolution, listing it instead as an under-display FaceTime camera with support for 1080p video at 30 or 60 fps.
