The Best Feature of iOS 4.2 That No One's Talking About

The new iOS 4.2 Golden Master Seed was released to developers yesterday and it contains a cool new feature that no one's talking about.

Mike Keller from PCWorld elaborates on the feature he thinks will be very exciting: MIDI.

I'll even admit I may have skimmed past the MIDI API's added in the first 4.2 beta without so much as batting an eye. But now that it's here I think the importance of the new framework is setting in. The iPhone and iPad have already gained some attention as music creation tools (if only in novelty), but I believe serious musicians may now start to recognize iOS as a real studio tool. The large touch screen of the iPad makes it a pretty powerful (and extremely flexible) controller. It will be interesting to see what developers come up with using the iPhone's accelerometer and gyroscope as MIDI input.

there's already OSC which can also transport data of all the ios devices' sensors, depending on the software used (besides osc's superior network implementation). but anyways, yay for midi!

I like this. I really like the gyro and accelerometer idea to control sound. Imagine holding a finger on a note on a keyboard or some kind of sound pad, and tilting your iDevice to adjust pitch, or rotating the gyro to adjust phase or tremolo speed etc. Would be awesome!

Totally agree Mike, lots of possibilities for this. Excited to see what developers do with the function.
