A new study from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners reveals the color preferences of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c buyers. Apple sells the flagship iPhone 5S in three colors: Space Gray, Silver, and Gold. The iPhone 5C comes in five colors: Blue, White, Green, Pink and Yellow.

For the iPhone 5S, Space Gray accounts for 43% of all iPhone 5S sales. For the iPhone 5C, Blue and White had similar shares overall, at 27% and 25%, respectively, while Yellow had by far the lowest share, at 7% overall.

Men preferred the space gray iPhone 5s, while women preferred silver. The gold iPhone 5s was equally liked among men and women.

When looking at the iPhone 5c, men favored the white and blue colors (32% each), while women favored the pink color. Yellow was disliked by both men and women.

CIRP Partner and Co-Founder Mike Levin says, “iPhone 5S and 5C colors seem to confirm some traditional gender biases. In the iPhone 5C, men prefer the neutral white, and the Space Gray in the iPhone 5S. In contrast, women prefer lighter silver 5S and the brighter iPhone 5C colors. Interestingly, no one, including the women in the survey, appears to want the Yellow iPhone 5C very much.”

I think these figures are tainted by the fact that you could pretty much only get the space gray anywhere. I went to at least 6 shops that sold phones and every single one of them that had the phone in stock only had space grey and EVERY shop said there was a short supply of silver and gold until mid October.

I remember a similar poll of Android users. The 'men' preferred pink phones; the 'women' preferred yellow.
