iOS 7.1 is Reportedly Causing Personal Hotspot Problems

Posted March 19, 2014 at 8:46pm by iClarified
iOS 7.1 appears to be causing Personal Hotspot issues for many users, according to a growing thread on Apple's Support Communities.

Following the update, some users have been unable to save APN settings for personal hotspots. The information can be entered into the APN fields of the Cellular Data Settings menu; however, the values do not save.

The problem has been reported by users with various devices including the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, and 5s. One report says the bug was present in all the betas leading up to the public release but never addressed.

Hi all, the same problem in Italy with Wind Carrier and (at least) iPhone 4. I'm an iOS developer, and I raise a bug issue since the beginning of this problem in beta 2-3-4-5. Apple engineers replied to me with "please attach a screenshot of the problem".

Obviously the problem is very simple to explain, e.g.: iphone4, ios 7.1 beta5, change hotspost apn settings, go back, forward again into apn settings, and changes are not kept.

So, if this is the level of Apple engineers ... what the f### of a screenshot should I attach? Bah ... really thinking to switch to Nexus 5.

Some reports suggests that Apple has blocked personal hotspots for carriers that do not allow the feature; however, there are posts from users whose carriers do support tethering that refute this assumption.

My hotspot seems to work, even without saving the APN settings. Weird, but effective....:D

And since there was iOS 6.1.3, maybe iOS 7 will end up on 7.1.3.

Funny how apple patched the evasi0n jailbreak, yet did not put enough work into making sure the hotspot worked BEFORE releasing 7.1 SMH at apple.. Eager to stop jailbreakers, yet not eager enough to make a functioning OS.. That's why i am at 7.0.4, jailbroken, couldnt be happier..

I upgraded an Iphone 4S and Iphone 5 to 7.1, both have the same issue of Personal Hotspot settings not appearing after upgrade. But personal Hotspot works fine nonetheless even without the settings. And yes battery performance for Iphone 4S on 7.1 is improved as well as overall responsiveness. So personal hotspot issue is a bug in iOS 7.1

We use Hell (B e l l Mobility) for work, and iPhone 5. Bell has the tethering APN provisioned in iOS for a while now and works just fine. It could be for carrier/plans that don't allow tethering. Anyhow, works here on a plan that allows tethering. No manual APN entry. I can try with my Tru sim, which I have to manually enter the APN settings see if this change anything.

This is the reason that since iOS 2 we learned never to upgrade till we know that there are no bugs which will make us sorry for doing so and now you guys also learned the hard way why never to rush! I'm still on iOS 7.0.6 and going to stay with 7.0.6 upgrading to 7.1 which really was such a tiny upgrade should have been called 7.0.7 would have been a stupidity by me. This upgrade is only good for the iPhone 4 which burley moved on 7.0.X and was fixed on 7.1 any other device should have waited.

No issues with my iPhone 5S. I frequently use my hotspot. Didn't find any problem. So far iOS 7.1 is great!

no issues with the hotspot feature, on 7.1 and i5S, using Cellcom in Israel and CYTA in Cyprus! battery life is also superb with heavy data & gps usage. def. best iOS so far.
