Customer Claims Apple Store Employee Gave Him a Receipt With a Homophobic Slur

Posted August 13, 2014 at 8:53pm by iClarified
A Portland Apple Store employee allegedly handed a customer, who self-identifies as queer, a receipt with a homophobic slur, reports The Oregonian. Adam Catanzarite says that he was handed a receipt on July 8th after purchasing EarPods with an email address of "f@g.com".

Catanzarite took to Facebook to spread the word about his situation, after not being satisfied with the store manager's response.

So here's a thing. I got called a f@g by an ‪#‎Apple‬ employee here in ‪#‎Portland‬. The store manager did not do what he said he would to rectify the situation, so now I feel it is important to share the story.
Being queer and having worked with queer youth, I know first-hand that this is an example of the type of ‪#‎homophobic‬ beliefs and actions that lead young people to harm themselves. This type of action is NOT OKAY, especially from a company that prides itself on being LGBTQ inclusive and welcoming.
My friends, I please ask that you like this status or share it with your networks to let them know that ‪#‎homophobia‬ does not have a place in PDX (or anywhere) and that you reconsider where you spend your money. Perhaps the ‪#‎Applestore‬ is not so deserving.

An Apple spokeswoman said the company is aware of the incident, but declined to say more. Apple just recently participated in the San Francisco Pride Parade where it highlighted its commitment to equality and diversity.

It is all about perception. Be a gueer or whatever you want, but don't overreact on such a minor issue. That's how wars start you know!

If @ is normally pronounced as at then the email adres actually says "fatg.com". Think it's all in the eye of the beholder ;-p

@iClarified: Y'know your comment section is consistently a venue for persons harboring less than sterling intentions toward their fellow iClarified readers. Think maybe its time to institute some accountability a la Google for comments made? I certainly do.

G.com is a legitimate domain. So f@g.com doesn't imply anything except a valid email address at that domain. I don't see a problem here.

So theirs clearly a barcode in the image. Why hasn't someone run the code through the apple system and verified the receipt.

I simply followed order. If you claimed that's your email address, then I entered it as it is. Should I get fired for doing my job?

I guarantee the employee, did not intend anything negative. I can presume the employee wanted to quickly print the customers receipt and send them off. When you are typing on a POS system it sometimes requires you to enter an email address. When you look at the keyboard on an ios device, the letters f & g are in the center. The employee literally hit f@g.com so that the system would read it as an email address. Apple prides itself on diversity and has many different people from different backgrounds and cultures and orientations.
