Apple Updates 'XProtect' Anti-Malware Definitions to Block iWorm Threat

Posted October 5, 2014 at 7:34am by iClarified
Apple has updated its XProtect anti-malware system to block two variants of the iWorm threat we reported on yesterday, reports MacRumors.

The complex malicious program known as Mac.BackDoor.iWorm has already infected over 18,500 Macs which can now be used by criminals to carry out various instructions.

The updated "XProtect" plist now lists OSX.iWorm.A and OSX.iWorm.B as threats preventing them from being installed. OS X typically checks for updates to XProtect on a daily basis so most users should already be protected.

More details on the malware and how it works can be found here.

That would appear to be the update for Snow Leopard and Lion. The ones for Mountain Lion and above also include a definition for OSX.iWorm.C. Presumably that's because the threat won't run on older versions of OS X.

My Windows works like the first day I bought it. I'm just annoyed that they stop supporting my Windows 98!!! I can barely play my solitaire.

So true! You windows guys never see a single news about windows Worms and Viruses! Because there are millions which will fill the whole website all around! So let's just close our eyes on them and pretent they don't exist! Let just talk about this single one we found on Macs!

@Rojan, have you seen any windows users pretend windows viruses don't exist or brand any virus news as fake? looks like you are describing yourself my friend. being aware of the situation will make you more prepared and there would exist more ways of protection. pretending it can't happen like you do, would mean you won't even see it coming.
