A federal jury has ordered Apple to pay VirnetX over $625 million for wilfully infringing on its patents, reports CNBC. Apple used VirnetX's technology in its FaceTime and iMessage features.

The award was even more than the $532 that VirnetX had asked for going into the trial. Previously, VirnetX won a $368 million dollar verdict but an appeals court said that the jury incorrectly calculated that award and sent the case back for a new trial.

Notably, Apple is asking for a mistrial.

Also on Wednesday, Apple filed court papers asking U.S. District Judge Robert Schroeder for a mistrial, saying VirnetX's attorneys had misled and confused the jury during closing arguments. It is not known when Schroeder will make a ruling on that request.

Even if the ruling stands, Apple will likely file an appeal.

625 million is chump change. Well worth the loss to gain market share. It's smart business.

Why am I always reading about Apple , the supposed market leader in all things electrical seemingly constantly infringing on other companies products or tech software. It seems that post S. Jobs, they have or Mr Cook and Co have decided everything is fair in love and war including aquiring other companies tech without permission.

What permission? Tim Cook runs apple. He makes the choices just like what goes into apple products, nobody is the boss of him, so what makes you think so?
