Apple is working on a smart display that could be used to control smart home devices, according to new report from Bloomberg.
The display is essentially a low-end iPad that can be mounted on the wall using magnetic fasteners.
The push into smart displays will start with a tablet product — essentially a low-end iPad — that can control things like thermostats and lights, show video and handle FaceTime chats, people with knowledge of the plans said. The product could be mounted on walls or elsewhere using magnetic fasteners, positioning it as more of a home gadget than a regular iPad.
Sources say Apple has also discussed the idea of building larger smart home displays as it looks to better compete with Amazon and Google in the smart home space. Another option being considered is a docking stand for its current iPads.
Bloomberg says work on the rumored device that combines a TV box, smart speaker, and Face Time camera has suffered setbacks but is still in development. It was originally set to debut this year but that timetable has slipped.
The smart display will purportedly launch next year at the earliest.
