EU Warns Apple Not to Limit USB-C

The EU has written a letter to Apple warning the company not to limit USB-C fast charging speeds to MFi certified devices, according to zeit.de.

The EU Commission has Apple warned against making some functions available only for original Apple cables when changing the charging plug technology. Restrictions on the interaction with chargers are not permitted, wrote EU Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton in a letter that is available to the dpa news agency. The EU directive for uniform chargers is to be enforced December 2024.

In the letter, Breton apparently references reports that Apple is planning to limit data and charging speeds for USB-C iPhone accessories that do not have MFi certification

"Devices that do not meet the requirements for the single charger are not approved on the EU market," said Breton.

The Commission also reminded Apple of this at a meeting in mid-March.

While Apple may not be able to limit charging speeds to MFi certified chargers, it may still be able to limit data transfers and compatibility with certain peripherals. Additionally, this year's new iPhone models will be on the market before the EU's new regulations take effect.
