Apple has officially introduced the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones, bringing the H2 chip to the AirPods Max for the first time. The updated headphones deliver stronger noise cancellation, new intelligent audio capabilities, and creator-focused tools made possible by the USB-C connection.
The biggest internal upgrade is the move to the H2 chip. Upgraded silicon powers a new computational audio algorithm that makes Active Noise Cancellation up to 1.5 times more effective than the original model, specifically targeting low-frequency drones like airplane engines. Transparency mode has also been completely reworked to sound more natural so users can stay aware of their environment without the audio feeling overly processed.
Adding the H2 chip allows the AirPods Max to catch up with the rest of Apple's audio lineup. The headphones now support Adaptive Audio, which automatically blends noise cancellation and transparency dynamically as your environment changes. Conversation Awareness is also on board, smoothly dropping media volume and reducing background noise the moment you start speaking to someone nearby.
For phone calls, Voice Isolation helps prioritize your voice while actively stripping out ambient sounds. Apple also included Siri Interactions, allowing users to privately respond to incoming announcements by simply nodding their head yes or shaking it no. Personalized Volume gradually learns your listening habits to fine-tune audio levels automatically, while Loud Sound Reduction constantly monitors and tamps down harsh environmental spikes.
One of the standout additions is support for Live Translation. Powered by Apple Intelligence, the feature allows for in-person conversational translation across different languages. This capability requires a paired iPhone running iOS 26 and brings the over-ear model into parity with the AirPods Pro 3.
Apple is positioning the new hardware heavily toward content creators and professionals. When connected via the included USB-C cable, the headphones support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio. This hardwired connection offers ultra-low latency, allowing musicians to mix tracks with Personalized Spatial Audio and head tracking directly inside apps like Logic Pro. Apple also noted a new studio-quality recording mode for podcasters and vocalists to capture richer vocal textures.
The Digital Crown gains a practical new trick as well. Mirroring a feature recently added to Apple's in-ear models via a firmware update, the crown now functions as a camera remote. Pressing it will snap a photo or start and stop video recording on a connected iPhone or iPad. Gamers also benefit from the updated hardware, with reduced wireless audio latency making iOS and macOS games feel more responsive when Game Mode is active.
The AirPods Max 2 maintain the $549 price tag and are available in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue. Pre-orders open on Wednesday, March 25, with retail availability and initial deliveries expected to begin early next month.
