Apple Planning Massive Mac Refresh Over Next Two Years

Apple is planning to refresh every Mac it sells over the next two years as demand grows from users running AI workloads, according to a new Bloomberg report.



The rollout begins this fall with a refreshed entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro (code-named J804), one of the first Macs to feature Apple's upcoming M6 chip, alongside the first iMac refresh in two years (J833 and J834). Development of both machines is complete, though neither is expected to ship until the fall.


Late 2026 to early 2027 is expected to bring the biggest Mac redesign in years. High-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models (K114 and K116) are expected to feature OLED displays, touchscreen support, and a fresh design. They will reportedly use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and are already being tested with macOS 27.1, which is scheduled for release to consumers at the end of October.

Early 2027 should bring modest updates to the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models (J913 and J915). A redesigned entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro (K104) is expected to follow, adopting the same overall design as the higher-end models while using a standard M7 chip.

A refreshed MacBook Neo is also in development, pairing an A19 Pro chip with additional memory and new color options. The refreshed budget laptop is intended to build on the model's broad appeal despite Apple's recent price increase to $699.

Desktop Macs are also slated for updates. New Mac mini configurations are being tested with M5 Pro and M6 chips, while the Mac Studio is expected to gain M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors. Exactly when those systems arrive, and in what configurations, will depend on memory-chip supplies. The ongoing global memory shortage has already pushed shipping estimates for some current Mac mini and Mac Studio models to three months or more.


Looking further ahead, Apple is reportedly planning an OLED MacBook Air for as early as 2028, along with a future OLED iMac that would bring the same display technology planned for future MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. Rather than introducing M6 Pro and M6 Max processors, the company is reportedly accelerating development of its AI-focused M7 chip family. Follow-up versions of the redesigned high-end MacBook Pro are expected between late 2027 and early 2028 with M7 Pro and M7 Max chips.

Mac sales are projected to grow for a third consecutive year as more users adopt the platform for demanding AI workloads.
