Verizon CFO Fran Shammo revealed that the next generation iPhone will be a 'global' device, during a conference call with analysts this morning.
The fluctuation, I believe, will come when a new device from Apple is launched, whenever that may be, and that we will be, on the first time, on equal footing with our competitors on a new phone hitting the market, which will also be a global device.
It's been long rumored that the iPhone 5 will feature a Qualcomm chip with GSM/CDMA capabilities; however, this is the closest to an official confirmation we're likely to get.

I guess the confirmation is nice, but that part is hardly rocket science.
2 production variants (not to mention software cycles for iOS) for the same device= not cost effective.
